Come cheer and enjoy as the Albany Irish Rowing Club races for the North American Currach Association Championship! Teams from Annapolis, Milwaukee, New London, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston and Albany make up the North American Currach Association (NACA). Each team hosts a regatta every year and race for the (NACA) Championship at the end of the season.

The 2010 Capital District Scottish Games are this weekend, September 4th & 5th at the Altamont Fair Grounds. The games are open on Saturday at 9:00am to 6:00pm and on Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The Scottish Games 5K Race is on Sunday!

Beginning in 1976, the Uncle Sam Parade and Celebration has grown tremendously having thousands attend every year. The parade is one of several events marking Samual Wilson’s birthday, which was Sept 13, 1766. Wilson was the Troy meatpacker and Massachusetts native who many believe was the inspiration for the Uncle Sam figure. Supporters of the Wilson story say he became associated with Uncle Sam when he stamped the initials “U.S.” on barrels of meat he supplied to American forces in the war of 1812. Seeing the initials, soldiers began referring to Wilson as Uncle Sam. Samual Wilson died in 1854 and is buried in Troy’s Oakwood Cemetery.

The City of Troy and Wellcare present the 5th Annual Uncle Sam Jam takes place this year on Saturday, August 28, from 2pm to 8pm, at Historic Powers Park in Lansingburgh. This year’s show, billed as, Guitar Hero’s, will feature some of the Capital Regions finest guitarist over the course of the day, including, John Morse, Chris Busone, Frank Daley, Joe Mele, and 13 year old guitar sensation, Jared Alpern.
